We woke up again today to Mrs. Goode’s music. Finally, we did not paint for the whole day today. Instead, we went to the Hope House in Gate City. It was a great learning experience because the lady working there told us about the problems going on in Gate City. We learned that there was a lot of unemployment in Gate City. We also learned that there was tons of drug abuse, which caused women’s abuse. The lady also told us that local business owners voted out the construction of two Walmart’s, and a prison, which would’ve allowed the unemployed to have jobs and have an income. After, we headed to a local Gate City park and had lunch with the three other teams. Following lunch, we headed to a family’s home and helped the Orange team prime the walls. It was hot today, so after work we headed to the rope swing for a cool off. We eventually came back to the DDC and had a Not So Talent Talent Show. Robert peeled a granola bar wrapper, Colin was part of the Spinning Dolphin, Izzy was Izzy, Olivia provided information on Canada Bananas, and Amanda was part of the all girls song, The Itsy Bitsy Spider. Last but not least, we competed in the final team challenge, which was a repeat of the first team challenge, building the tallest tower out of spaghetti. This ended up with the blue team winning, but since we had three points, they tied us and we headed to a sudden death game of Jenga, which we ended up winning! Purple team was the champs!
Robert- I’m taking away the learning experiences of feeling the appreciation of helping someone in need. Helping paint three different houses and finishing them all, made me feel really good about myself and my team.
Colin- Through the trip to Dungannon, I learned how fortunate everyone who came on this trip is. We all are so lucky and seeing how some people lived just reiterated that. Some people were living in conditions that I could just not believe and it showed me how fortunate we are.
Izzy- After being on this trip I realized how much I take for granted. Some of the houses were in such terrible conditions and disarray that I couldn’t believe. I feel very good about helping paint the houses and helping at the Hope House and I’m glad I had the opportunity to help these people and come on this trip.
Olivia- I learned that while the challenges I face every day are different than the ones Dungannon residents combat, they are still people with whom I can relate and connect. I may not live in the same conditions as these people, but I was able to meet them and see that they essentially want the same things I want - love, safety, and stability.
