Today we woke up to Ms. Goode’s music choice. Scotty, Reid, Drew and some other boys went on a three mile run with Ms. Ting and Coach Kondo at 6 o’clock in the morning. We had a morning challenge which was a quiz to remember facts from our hike yesterday. After almost running out of gas on the way to our site, we went to a house in the community and helped paint ceilings. There was a boy there who was the nephew of the owner, and he helped us a lot. It was cool to see how people our age live in this community versus how we live in ours. It was a different feel to see what made them happy (us being there to paint) versus what made us happy (not having to worry about painting our own houses.) We ate lunch at the house and we talked to the grandfather of the owner. He told us how he had worked in a paper factory for 37 years. He talked about his experiences and it was really interesting to learn about his work as technology in that business evolved. After a hard day of work, we came home, got cleaned up washing the paint off of us, and ate dinner (spaghetti). Then, we went to an old hardware store and listened and danced to some live music. It was cool to see how they kept a fun type of music going, even through the pop world today. The locals were so excited to be together there as a community. They seemed to have nothing to worry or stress about. We could tell that they really welcomed us in the dance area. Everyone had a great time and Maria even sang. When we got back, we played 2 of our games in the cornhole tournament. After winning both, we realized we have 3 out of the 4 teams in the semifinals. Afterwards, we found out we tied with Purple for our morning challenge and went into a sudden death round. After a tough loss, the day ends with Purple with 3 points, Blue with 1, and Orange and Red with 0. We are hoping to get enough points to win tomorrow, wish us luck!
P.S. We have noticed a theme around the week that has been present in the people we helped. We think all of them have been so grateful for the work we have done without expecting a reward. We also discovered that they are happy where they are in their community and being together as a community.
